ANNVILLE, Pa. – A pair of former National Hockey League players have joined the Lebanon Valley College ice hockey coaching staff.
Joining Interim Head Coach Howard Hutton on the bench are former Pittsburgh Penguin and Philadelphia Flyer Mitch Lamoureux and ex-Winnipeg Jet, Buffalo Sabre, and New York Islander Tom Draper.
Lamoureux played in 73 games for the Penguins and Flyers from 1983-88. One of Mario Lemieux’s first pro teammates, he finished his career with 11 goals and nine assists. He also played for the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears from 1986-89, 1993-95, and 1997-99, and was a member of the Bears’ Calder Cup champion team in 1988. Lamoureux’s jersey number was retired by the Bears and hangs from the rafters of the Hersheypark Arena, where Lebanon Valley plays its home games.
Lamoureux’s son, Corey, is a member of the Lebanon Valley College baseball team.
A former goalkeeper, Draper will work with the Flying Dutchmen’s goalies. A 1987 graduate of Vermont, he enjoyed a lengthy professional career, winning over 350 games in a career that spanned 16 seasons and included stops in six different leagues. In six NHL seasons, he amassed a career record of 19-23-5 to go with a 3.70 goals-against average and one shutout. At one point or another, Draper was a backup goalie for NHL greats Grant Fuhr, Dominic Hasek, and Ron Hextall.
Lebanon Valley (2-15, 0-8 ECAC West) returns to the ice on Friday, when it visits No. 6-ranked Neumann College at 7 p.m. in an ECAC West match-up.
