BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Moravian College outscored Lebanon Valley 14-4 to start the game and never looked back, as the host Greyhounds posted a 77-59 victory in Commonwealth Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday evening at Johnston Hall.
Moravian (8-5, 2-1 CC) had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by Jenny Hackleman’s 14 points. Sophomore forward Megan Bish Lebanon Valley (4-8, 1-2 CC) with a season-high 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting in 25 minutes off the bench.
The Flying Dutchmen shot 52.8% from the field, including 66.7% in the first half, but were guilty of 35 turnovers. Moravian shot 50.0% in the first half and finished with a 43.5% mark.
Junior guard Donna Geiger added 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals for LVC while junior guard Jenna Gambino had eight points and four steals.
LVC leading scorer Monica Johnson, averaging 14.7 points per game entering the night, was held to a season-low five points while playing only 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
Amanda Brown finished with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including a 3-for-5 effort from beyond the arc, for Moravian.
The Greyhounds led by 10 (28-18) with 7:55 left in the opening half before a 12-2 LVC run pulled the Valley to within a bucket (32-30) with 3:57 remaining. Gambino sparked the rally with a conventional three-point play, and Geiger capped it with a fastbreak lay-up. It was a 36-32 game with 1:25 on the clock after a jumper from sophomore guard Amie Bickert, but Moravian scored the final six points of the period and took a 42-32 lead into the break.
Moravian gradually pulled away in the second half, pushing its lead to 15 (54-39) with 12:43 left before going ahead by 20 (67-47) with 6:50 remaining.
The Greyhounds finished 82.6% (19-for-23) at the foul line while Lebanon Valley made 77.3% (17-for-22) of its shots at the charity stripe.
Lebanon Valley returns to the court on Saturday, when it visits No. 8-ranked Messiah College in a Commonwealth Conference game starting at 6 p.m.
