Box Score
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Patrick Lenehan scored in the 12th minute, and Matt Dorsey added an insurance tally in the 41st minute as No. 2 Messiah defeated Lebanon Valley 2-0 in Commonwealth Conference men’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Herbert Field.
Lebanon Valley (3-6, 0-2 CC) shut out Messiah (7-0-1, 1-0-), the defending Division III national champions, over the final 49:45, with sophomore goalie Tim Mehl coming off the bench to blank the Falcons over the final 48:29. Mehl finished with five saves.
Lenehan put the Falcons on the board when he headed home a perfectly placed cross from Kai Kasiguran inside the right post for his third goal of the season. Dorsey set the final score when he took a pass at the top of the box and rolled it past an oncoming goalkeeper for his first tally of the year.
Mehl, who entered the game late in the first half, was challenged early and often in the second stanza. He stopped three shots over the first three-and-a-half minutes of the half, including several from point-blank range.
Dustin Shambach earned the shutout for Messiah, making a pair of saves. Junior John Mentzer started in goal for the Dutchmen and stopped three shots.
Lebanon Valley continues its Commonwealth Conference schedule on Saturday, when it visits Elizabethtown at 2 p.m.
