ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sarah Schaffer scored the game-winning goal in the 38th minute, leading Widener University to a 1-0 women’s soccer win over Lebanon Valley in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon at Herbert Field.

Schaffer converted a header off a direct kick from Sam Baer to help Widener (5-0-1, 0-1 CC) keep its perfect record intact.

Lebanon Valley (1-4-1, 0-1 CC) had a chance in the game’s closing seconds, earning a penalty corner with under a half minute to go. The kick, taken by senior Gretchen Artz on the right, rolled past the goalie and stopped dangerously close to the goal line by the left post, but it was booted away by a Widener player to secure the Pioneers victory.

Sophomore Erika Ely came up with seven saves for the Valley while Kelly Quinn stopped two shots to earn the shutout for Widener.

Lebanon Valley picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it visits St. Mary’s (Md.) at 4:30 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
