Softball Sweeps Wilkes in Regular Season Finale

Game 1 Box Score  Game 2 Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa.  – Junior Jenn Roberts threw a four-hit shutout in the opener, tying a pair of school records, and Lebanon Valley exploded for 15 hits in the nightcap en route to a doubleheader sweep of Wilkes University in non-conference softball action Tuesday afternoon at the LVC Softball Park.

Lebanon Valley won 2-0 in Game One, then captured a 12-2 decision in the second game, which was called after four and a half innings due to the eight-run rule. With its Game One victory, LVC snapped Wilkes’ (23-13) 11-game winning streak.

LVC (26-10) has now won six games in a row and is one victory from tying its single-season school record set when last year’s team finished 27-12.

With her shutout, her third in a row, Roberts earned her 33rd career victory, tying the Lebanon Valley career record held by Amy Zellers ’00. Her shutout was also her seventh of the year, as she also tied her own single-season school record set last year.

Junior Amy Batz also got into the record-breaking act, as she picked up her 46th hit of the year to reset her own single-season record of 45 set as a freshman in 2004.

In the opener, Wilkes starting pitcher Samantha Evanich was in control, as she carried a perfect game into the fourth inning. But after retiring the first 11 batters, Batz tripled to right with two out, and junior Jenn Parks singled her home with a single to right-center.

Lebanon Valley cushioned its lead in the fifth against Wilkes reliever Maureen Pelot. With one out, sophomore Amy Weist, freshman Katie DeJulio, and sophomore Lauren Sanford worked three consecutive walks before junior Lisa DiCristofaro lifted a sacrifice fly to right, making it 2-0.

Roberts (10-3) retired the side in the order in the fourth and sixth, and did not allow a runner to reach third. She struck out five and walked none.

Evanich (7-5) yielded only one run on three hits over four innings but was charged with the loss. She struck out three and walked none.

Lebanon Valley led 2-1 after one and a half innings before breaking open the nightcap with a nine-run, nine-hit second, when it sent 15 batters to the plate.

DiCristofaro and winning pitcher Kelly O’Toole each went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Valley in Game Two. DiCristofaro also drove in three runs and scored twice while O’Toole had two RBIs and two runs.

Batz finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs in the second game while Parks was 2-for-4 at the plate.

O’Toole (6-4) threw the first three innings and yielded two runs on four hits and one walk. Sophomore Nicolle Henry came on the fourth and fired a pair of scoreless innings, allowing only a single and a walk while striking out three.

Wilkes starter Kaitlyn Kormanik (2-1) suffered the loss in the nightcap. She got through the first but did not retire a batter in the second before leaving the game.

Leadoff hitter Nadine Taylor was 3-for-3 for the Colonels in Game Two.

Lebanon Valley makes its third straight appearance in the Commonwealth Conference championship tournament this weekend when it faces Albright College at 1 p.m. on Friday at tournament host Susquehanna University.
