EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Lauren Agresti tossed a one-hit shutout in the opener, and Samantha Evanich worked an eight-inning, complete-game victory in the nightcap as host Wilkes University swept a doubleheader from Lebanon Valley in non-conference softball action at the Ralston Complex Thursday afternoon. The Colonels won 3-0 and 2-1.
Lebanon Valley (20-10) held Wilkes to eight hits over 14 innings, but Agresti and Evanich limited LVC to just six hits.
In the first game, Wilkes (17-11) scored all of its runs on a second-inning, three-run homer from No. 8 hitter Shelley Pheiff, and Agresti fell one out shy of a no-hitter. Then in Game Two, Kathy Dalton was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth inning due to international tie-breaking rules, and she scored when a sacrifice bunt was thrown away during the next at-bat.
Junior Kelly O’Toole pitched Game One for Lebanon Valley and held the Colonels to three hits. After Pheiff’s home run, O’Toole (5-4) was perfect, retiring the final 14 batters she faced. She walked none and struck out two.
Agresti (9-4) held Lebanon Valley to only one baserunner over the first six innings, as she hit freshman Katie DeJulio leading off the third. She was down to her last out in the seventh when her own error allowed junior Jenn Parks to reach first. Freshman Crystal Nolen then legged out an infield single to break up the no-hitter, but Agresti ended the game with a strikeout to keep her shutout intact. She walked none and struck out 10.
Lebanon Valley scored its only run of the afternoon on two hits and an error in the fifth inning of Game Two. DeJulio led off with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jessica Salisbury. Sophomore Amy Weist then singled to center, and a bobbled ball allowed DeJulio to score.
Wilkes answered in the bottom of the fifth against LVC starter Alisa Albers when Dalton smacked a one-out solo homer. However, Albers would also settle in after the long ball and hold the Colonels hitless the rest of the way.
In the top of the eighth, Weist was placed on second to start the inning and sophomore Nicolle Henry sacrificed her to third, but Evanich got a strikeout and groundout to get out of the inning.
Evanich (5-4) scattered five hits in the nightcap, walking none and striking out six. Albers (6-2) held Wilkes to four hits, walked two, and finished with a career-high eight strikeouts.
Lebanon Valley returns to Commonwealth Conference play on Saturday, when it visits Juniata College for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
