Box Score
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior Taylor Sgrignoli threw 8 1/3 innings to get the win on the mound while junior Dan Kelly and sophomore Corey Lamoureux had three hits apiece to lead the Lebanon Valley College baseball team to a 5-2 Commonwealth Conference win over Moravian College Thursday afternoon at McGill Park.
Lebanon Valley (8-17, 6-7 CC) trailed 2-1 after the first inning, but took the lead for good with a two-run second against Moravian starter John Bisco. Sophomore Chris Schank led off with a walk and scored on a double to left-center from junior Brad Brandt before Kelly followed up with an RBI double of his own three batters later with two out.
Sgrignoli (1-2), who worked the longest outing of his career, settled in after the first inning, when he allowed two runs on four hits. He was outstanding from the second through the seventh, when he held Moravian (5-20, 1-12 CC) hitless and scoreless while facing the minimum 18 batters. Only two Greyhounds reached base against Sgrignoli during that span – via a walk and an error – and both of the those runners were erased on a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play in the second and on an unorthodox 2-1-4-3 putout following a passed ball to end the fifth.
Lebanon Valley pushed its lead to 5-2 with a pair of unearned run in the seventh. With one out, sophomore John Mentzer reached on an error and scored when Schank doubled down the left-field line. Senior Matt Rich capped the scoring with an RBI triple to left-center.
Sgrignoli ran into trouble in the eighth, when the Greyhounds loaded the bases on three singles. But he induced Moravian cleanup hitter Richie Cline to flyout to right to end the inning.
Moravian threatened in the ninth, putting runners on first and second following an error and a walk. Then with one out, freshman Nick Faria came on out of the bullpen and promptly got a flyout and a fielder's choice to end the game and earn his second collegiate save.
Sgrignoli scattered seven hits, walked two, and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts. Bisco (1-1) gave up 10 hits and four walks over 6 1/3 innings while walking four and striking out three.
Lebanon Valley and Moravian conclude their season series with a doubleheader at Moravian on Friday starting at 1 p.m.
