CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Lebanon Valley College baseball team was swept by Haverford College in non-conference action Monday afternoon at Snedigar Sportsplex.

The Fords won the opener 3-2, then captured a 10-5 decision in the nightcap.

In Game One, freshman Charlie Kline started on the mound in his collegiate debut. The right-hander gave up 11 hits but limited Haverford (4-1) to three runs and worked out of numerous jams, stranding six runners in 6 2/3 innings of work. He walked two and struck out two.

Haverford jumped to the lead early, scoring twice on a two singles and a two-run double before an out was recorded. But Kline retired the next three batters to get out of the inning. The Fords threatened again in the second with a leadoff triple and in the third when it had runners on the corners with one out. But Kline set down three in a row in the second and induced an inning-ending double play the next inning.

Lebanon Valley (1-3) tied it up in the bottom of the fifth, when the Dutchmen pushed across two unearned runs. After junior catcher Richie Schwartz reached on an error to lead off, junior leftfielder Derek Helwig singled before freshman rightfielder Bert Malloy continued his hot start with a two-run single through the right side.

After leaving a runner on third in the fourth and on second in the fifth, the Fords pushed across the decisive run in the sixth on a double, groundout, and sacrifice fly.

Lebanon Valley kept in close in the seventh, as sophomore left-hander Andrew Pipkin came on with runners on first and second with two outs and induced a flyout. The Dutchmen threatened in the bottom of the inning when Schwartz ripped a one-out single, but Haverford starter John Castronova (1-0) got a pair of flyouts to escape with a complete-game victory.

Castronova held LVC to five hits and struck out three while walking none.

In the second game, Haverford broke open a close game with a five-run, five-hit fourth, making it 8-2. The Fords jumped out to a 3-0 lead with one run in the first and two in the third before a two-run fourth. Senior first baseman Jon Kelly walked with the bases loaded before freshman leftfielder Travis Smart lofted a sacrifice fly to center.

It was 10-3 heading into the top of the seventh before the Dutchmen plated a pair of runs on a bases-loaded, pinch-hit walk by freshman Brandon Thompson and pinch-hit single by freshman Brandon Stoothoff. LVC had the bases loaded with two outs when Haverford reliever Jeff Suell got a lineout to end the game.

Senior Ryan Dalton started on the mound for the Dutchmen and took the loss, giving up eight runs (seven earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out two.

Sophomore second baseman Corey Lamoureux was 2-for-2 for LVC in the nightcap.
