Women’s Hoops Hits Century Mark in Win Over Eastern

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley opened the game on a 16-2 run and never looked back, as LVC defeated Eastern University 102-50 in non-conference women’s basketball action Monday evening at the LVC Gymnasium.

Freshman forward Megan Bish and junior forward Monica Johnson combined for 53 points for Lebanon Valley (6-15), with Bish connecting for 29 and Johnson netting 24. Led by a 10-for-13 shooting effort from Johnson, LVC hit a season-best 56.3% of its shots, its best mark since shooting a school-record 56.9% in an 87-54 win over Widener University on Feb. 8, 2003.

Lebanon Valley’s scoring output established an LVC Gymnasium single-game women’s record, surpassing LVC’s previous record of 89 set in this year’s season opener against Arcadia University. It was also only the third time in 85 games played in the three-year old facility in which a team scored 100 points, and it marked the first time a women’s team reached the century mark.

The last time Lebanon Valley scored 100 points was on Nov. 30, 2002 in a 101-70 win over Lehman College. LVC’s 102 points marked the team’s highest scoring total since its 104-31 win over Baptist Bible College on Dec. 1, 2001.

All 11 Flying Dutchmen received playing time and 10 found their way into the scoring column. Sophomore guard Jenna Gambino posted 11 points, five assists, and five steals while freshman guard Shannon Kueny notched season-highs of 10 points and eight rebounds. Bish also had seven rebounds for LVC.

Lebanon Valley handed out 28 assists, just two shy of the single-game school record set in 2001 against Neumann College and 2004 against Marywood University. Freshman guard Amie Bickert distributed six assists while Johnson, junior guard Allie Butler, and sophomore guard Brittany Sanders were credited with four helpers apiece.

Sophomore guard Patrice Freeman led Eastern (1-19) with 14 points. Sophomore forward Abbey Reed and junior guard Raya Shores added 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Eagles.

Four different players scored for Lebanon Valley on its opening run, although Bish and Johnson combined for 12 points during the stretch. The Dutchmen’s lead went over 20 when a Butler jumper made it 33-12 with 7:56 left in the opening period. A 10-0 LVC run at the end of the half pushed the Valley’s advantage to 53-24 before an Eastern lay-up just before the buzzer made it 53-26 at the intermission.

Lebanon Valley came up with 13 of its season-high 20 steals in the first half, when Eastern committed 21 of its 32 turnovers.

The Dutchmen continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 49-24 over the final 20 minutes.

Lebanon Valley returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits Moravian College at 8 p.m. in a Commonwealth Conference outing.
