HERSHEY, Pa. – Elmira College scored four second-period goals and the Soaring Eagles defeated Lebanon Valley 5-2 in ECAC West ice hockey action Friday evening at the Hersheypark Arena.
Elmira (2-5-1, 1-3 ECAC West) received two goals from Stefan Schoen while Rusty Masters had one goal, including the game-winner, and one assist. David McKenna added a pair of assists.
The Eagles out-shot the Flying Dutchmen 50-16. Freshman goalie Aaron Miller made 45 saves for Lebanon Valley (0-8, 0-5 ECAC West) while Casey Tuttle stopped 14 shots for Elmira.
Elmira went in front 1-0 just under five minutes into the game, when Noel Lortie intercepted a pass in front of the right circle before drilling in his second goal of the season. The Dutchmen answered with 12:26 left in the opening stanza when freshman Pat Skehan rebounded in a shot for his first collegiate goal.
The Eagles went back in front 6:40 into the second period. With Elmira on a 2-on-2 breakaway, McKenna delivered a perfect cross from the right to Schoen, who sent home a quick wrister from the left doorstep to make it a 2-1 game.
The action picked up at the end of the period, as four goals were scored in the final 4:49. With the Eagles on a power play, Masters gave Elmira a 3-1 lead on a rebound from the right post before sophomore Matt Rowe answered for the Dutchmen just 25 seconds later with an unassisted goal. Rowe stole the puck in the Eagles zone, then beat Tuttle to his right for his second goal of the season.
Elmira came back with two quick strikes to make it a 5-2 game at the second intermission. Andrew Bedford rebounded in a shot between the circles for his first goal of the season before Schoen notched his second tally of the game, sending in a one-timer from the left circle.
Lebanon Valley picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it hosts No. 10 Hobart at 3 p.m. back at the Hersheypark Arena.
