Men’s Basketball Drops 60-51 Decision to Ursinus

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College opened the second half on a 20-3 run, and the Bears defeated host Lebanon Valley 60-51 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Sunday afternoon at the LVC Gymnasium.

Junior guard Nick Shattuck posted 16 points and seven rebounds while freshman guard Remy Cousart had 14 points, eight rebounds, and six assists for Ursinus (1-0), which was playing its season opener. Senior forward Will Furey registered nine points and nine rebounds for the Bears.

Junior guard Jimmy Curran paced Lebanon Valley (2-2) with a game-high 18 points while sophomore guards Kyle Enoch and Dustin Kerns had 10 points apiece. Freshman forward Dan Dunkelberger pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for LVC.

After taking a 23-20 lead into halftime, Ursinus applied the clamps defensively at the start of the second period. After a Curran three-pointer gave the Dutchmen a 26-20 lead at the 18:16 mark, Ursinus held LVC scoreless over the next nine minutes. Shattuck and Furey did the bulk of the damage offensively for the Bears, as the pair combined to score all but two points during the run, which gave Ursinus a 40-26 lead with 9:25 to go.

Dunkelberger ended the drought for the Dutchmen, converting a lay-up with 9:16 left to make it 40-28. Kerns dropped in a lay-up with 7:45 left to reduce the deficit to single digits (42-33), but that’s as close as Lebanon Valley would get.

Ursinus salted the game away at the foul line, making 11 of 14 free throws in the final 2:28. The Bears finished 26-for-37 (70.3%) at the charity stripe.

Lebanon Valley was held to 25.0% shooting for the game while the Bears managed to connect on just 33.3% of its shots.

The Dutchmen scored the game’s first six points on a pair of Enoch three-pointers, giving the Dutchmen a 6-0 lead with 16:49 on the clock. But Ursinus came back with a 12-2 run, and a Michael Shema lay-up put the Bears in front 12-8 with 11:06 to go in the opening half. However, sophomore guard Dan Hodge scored four straight points as LVC went back on top (13-12) with 9:06 remaining in the half.

The Bears led by three (16-13) after back-to-back fast-break lay-ups from sophomore guard John Noonan and Shattuck, but the Dutchmen answered with a 7-0 run to assume a 20-16 lead 4:43 before the break, with Curran scoring the first six points of the LVC surge. Curran added a pair of free throws with 45 ticks showing to give the Dutchmen their three-point halftime advantage.

Lebanon Valley opens its Commonwealth Conference schedule on Wednesday, when it visits Albright College at 7 p.m.
