RYE, N.Y. – Lebanon Valley battled No. 3 Manhattanville to a 2-2 tie after two periods of play, but the Valiants erupted for five third-period goals en route to a 7-2 victory in ECAC West ice hockey action Friday evening at the Playland Ice Casino.
Lebanon Valley (0-6, 0-3 ECAC West) drew first blood, as junior Rob Scales scored just 2:15 into the game for his goal since his freshman season. But Manhattanville (7-0, 3-0 ECAC West) needed only 15 seconds to answer, with Scott Gosheen scoring for the Valiants. Freshman goalie Aaron Miller made 21 saves in the opening period, allowing the Dutchmen to overcome a 22-6 shot deficit in the stanza as the scoreboard read 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
In the second period, AJ Mikkelsen gave Manhattanville a 2-1 lead with a goal 4:42 into the stanza. But senior Alex Beatrice potted his third goal of the season 6:41 before the end of the period to make it 2-2. Once again, Miller turned aside 21 shots as the Valiants held a 22-7 edge in shots during the period.
Zeke Hume put Manhattanville up for good when he scored 1:51 into the final period before Arlen Marshall provided an insurance tally just 25 seconds later. Marshall scored short-handed midway through the period before Jason Murfitt and Matt Piegza also scored late in the stanza for the Valiants.
Miller added seven saves in the third period to finish with a season-high 49. He allowed the first four goals of the final period before sophomore Kelly Curl came on to make one save while allowing one goal over the final 4:58.
Lebanon Valley visits No. 9 Utica College on Saturday at 7 p.m. in another ECAC West match-up.
