CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Lebanon Valley College volleyball team advanced to the championship match of its season-opening tournament, the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic, with three straight wins over Friday and Saturday.
On Friday night, Lebanon Valley defeated SUNY New Paltz 3-1 (30-20, 30-16, 30-32, 30-15) before sweeping Baptist Bible 3-0 (30-23, 30-16, 30-20). Then on Saturday, LVC beat SUNY Fredonia 3-1 (27-30, 30-17, 30-28, 30-24), setting up a date with tournament host and 23rd-ranked SUNY Cortland in the championship match. Cortland prevailed 32-30, 30-28, 28-30, 30-27 to claim its third straight Red Dragon Tournament title.
Junior Natalie Goodfellow and senior Cat Roth were both named to the all-tournaments team. It was the second straight season that Goodfellow earned a spot on the Red Dragon All-Tournament Team.
Against New Paltz, junior Steph Bedgar notched 12 kills and three aces while Goodfellow delivered 11 kills. Roth dished out 53 assists to go with 14 digs while senior Katie Ferree had 21 digs and four aces. Freshman Erin Yost added 12 digs and five aces in her collegiate debut.
Goodfellow also had a solid match against Baptist Bible, hammering 15 kills. Senior Lexi Horstman knocked down 11 kills while Ferree totaled 12 digs and three aces. Sophomore Jill Miller and freshman Brandi Roth came up with 15 and 11 digs, respectively, while Cat Roth had 39 assists.
Goodfellow continued her hot hitting against Fredonia, nailing 21 kills while posting 13 digs. Horstman threw down 14 kills while Cat Roth racked up 45 assists, 17 digs, and four aces. Ferree and Brandi Roth had 18 and 17 digs, respectively.
In the championship match, it was Goodfellow leading the way once again, smashing 21 kills. Freshman Margaret Prebula had 12 kills while Ferree came up with 20 digs. Cat Roth distributed 49 assists and Yost had 10 digs.
Lebanon Valley continues its season on Wednesday, when it visits York (Pa.) College in a non-conference match starting at 7 p.m.
