ANNVILLE, Pa. – Junior Steph Marguglio scored the game-winning goal with 21:55 remaining, and the 11th-ranked Lebanon Valley College field hockey team captured its Commonwealth Conference opener, defeating Elizabethtown 2-1 Tuesday afternoon in a defensive-minded contest at the LVC Field Hockey Stadium.
Lebanon Valley improved to 4-1 and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Conference. Elizabethtown fell to 3-2 and 0-1 in conference play.
Only nine total shots were taken in the game, with LVC out-shooting the Blue Jays 6-3.
With the game tied 1-1, Marguglio slipped in her fifth goal of the season with an unassisted tally.
Lebanon Valley never trailed after sophomore Shauna Enck drilled in her team-leading sixth goal of the season, with an assist from junior Claire Behney 5:02 into the game. But Elizabethtown was quick to answer, as Mel Slessinger tied it up with her fifth goal of the year nearly four minutes later.
Junior Katie Pawlewicz stopped a pair of E-town shots to earn the win in goal and improve to 4-1. Kristen Callaghan made six saves in a losing effort for the Blue Jays.
Earlier in the day, LVC learned of its national ranking according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, which released its first Division III top-20 poll.
Lebanon Valley returns to action on Thursday, when it hosts Millersville at 4 p.m.
