Denlinger, Sgrignoli Pitch Baseball to Sweep of E-town

Game 1 Box Score   Game 2 Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. –  Freshman first baseman Paul Covine and senior rightfielder Ron Weaver each ripped a two-run homer in the opener, and junior Taylor Sgrignoli fired a seven-hit complete game in the nightcap as Lebanon Valley swept a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader from Elizabethtown Sunday afternoon at a windy and cold McGill Park.

Lebanon Valley won 4-3 in the first game, then completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory in Game Two on a walk-off single from sophomore leftfielder Dan Kelly.

The Flying Dutchmen (16-15, 7-11 CC), who have now won four games on their last at-bat this season, won their season series with Elizabethtown (16-14-1, 12-6 CC) for the first time since 2002. The Blue Jays, who beat Lebanon Valley 10-9 in Elizabethtown on Friday, lost their first two Commonwealth Conference games since winning their last seven.

Weaver finished the twinbill 4-for-6 with three RBIs for LVC, which snapped a five-game losing streak.

In the first game, Elizabethtown managed only one unearned run over the first six innings against Lebanon Valley starter Craig Denlinger. With two outs and a runner on first in the top of the second, leadoff hitter Jon Kalejta launched a deep fly ball deep to center, but it was misplayed by Kelly, allowing the runner to score.

Blue Jay starter Adam Rebert also pitched extremely well in the early going and retired the first nine batters he faced before senior second baseman Scott Montgomery led off with a bloop single in the fourth. But he was caught stealing and Rebert faced the minimum 12 batters over the first four frames.

The Dutchmen finally got to Rebert in the fourth. Weaver led off with a single to right before Covine followed up with a towering blast to left-center two batters later, crushing a 3-2 pitch out of the park for his first collegiate home run that put LVC on top 2-1.

Lebanon Valley used some two-out lightning to push its lead to 4-1 in the sixth. Montgomery led off with another single, and with two down Weaver drove a 1-0 pitch into the opposite field and off the second wall in left-center for his second long ball of the season.

Elizabethtown did not go quietly, however, and loaded the bases in the seventh on two walks, a single, and a fielder's choice. No. 6 hitter Scott Guise then drew a walk, making it 4-2, before junior Brian McFarlane was called in from the bullpen.

McFarlane induced a 6-4 fielder's choice that allowed a run to score before getting a groundout for his second collegiate save.

Denlinger (2-4) was charged with all three runs on six hits and eight walks while picking up his first win since March 2. He struck out two. Rebert (2-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk to go with three strikeouts.

The Blue Jays took the early lead in the second game as well, as No. 3 hitter Seth Guida smacked his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to put E-town up 2-0 in the first.

Sgrignoli settled in, however, to blank the Jays the rest of the way. He scattered four hits and two walks over the final six innings while stranding six runners on base.

Lebanon Valley tied the game with single runs in the second and third against E-town lefty Scott Beard. The Dutchmen cut it to 2-1 in the third when junior designated hitter Jon Kelly was hit with a pitch to lead off the inning and scored from third with two outs on a fielding error by the first baseman.

The Dutchmen got it done with two outs again in the third, as Dan Kelly tripled with two down before scoring two batters later on a Weaver double.

Beard threw well from the fourth through the sixth, allowing only a single in the fifth. He was one out from extra innings in the seventh before Lebanon Valley found a spark with two outs yet again. Denlinger clobbered a double into left-center before Dan Kelly came through with a single up the middle for his second game-ending hit of the season. He also had a walk-off single in the Duchmen's 10-9 win over Moravian on April 4.

Sgrignoli (5-0) recorded a career-high seven strikeouts while working his first collegiate complete game. Beard (2-2) allowed six hits and two walks while striking out three.

Dan Kelly finished 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

Lebanon Valley returns to action on Wednesday, when it hosts McDaniel at 3:30 p.m. in the Dutchmen's final non-conference game of the season.
