Softball Splits with Wilkes on Senior Day

Game 1 Box Score   Game 2 Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Jenn Roberts threw a five-inning, two-hit shutout and Lebanon Valley (22-8) banged out 10 hits in an 8-0 win over Wilkes in the opener of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Senior Day Thursday afternoon at the LVC Softball Park.

Sophomore Laurie Agresti hurled a three-hitter to lead Wilkes (23-9) to a 4-0 win in the nightcap.

With her victory, Roberts (12-1) tied the Lebanon Valley single-season wins record set by Amy Zellers '00 in 2000.

Playing the final home games of her career, senior first baseman Chris Jessen went 3-for-5 over the twinbill, including a 3-for-3 performance in the first game. Senior centerfielder Melissa Ulrich was 2-for-4 with two runs and was 2-for-3 in the first game.

Lebanon Valley wasted little time taking control of the first game, scoring five times on six hits in the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Jenn Parks and Ulrich ripped back-to-back RBI-singles before Roberts lined a two-run double over the rightfielder's head. Jessen capped the scoring with a run-scoring single up the middle.

Jessen made it 6-0 in the fourth when she doubled and scored on an error. Lebanon Valley crossed the plate twice in the fifth to bring the eight-run mercy rule into effect. Roberts drove in a run with a single before scoring from first on a Jessen double to left.

Roberts fired her fifth shutout of the season while allowing only a pair of bloop singles and a walk. She struck out six, bringing her season total to 98.

Jessen finished with two doubles in Game One while Ulrich and Roberts had two runs and two hits apiece.

Freshman Sarah Plavchak (6-6) suffered the loss for Wilkes.

In the nightcap it was the Colonels grabbing the early lead, scoring twice on two hits, two fielder's choices, and a wild pitch. A pair of singles and a groundout put runners on first and third before a ground ball resulted in a rundown between third and home. But the runner was able to get to back safely, loading the bases. On the following at-bat, a grounder was hit to the shortstop, but the runner on third beat the throw home to make it 1-0. The Colonels went up 2-0 on a wild pitch from junior starter Alisa Albers.

Wilkes added a run in the third on back-to-back doubles, then scored its final run on a walk, a stolen base, and a double in the fourth.

Albers (3-3) threw 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. She yielded six hits and three walks while striking out two.

Two days after throwing a one-hitter against ninth-ranked Moravian, sophomore Kelly O'Toole came on in relief to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings. She allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out two.

Agresti (16-3) walked three and struck out eight.

Lebanon Valley returns to Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday, when it visits Elizabethtown in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
