Baseball Downed by Messiah, 13-2

ANNVILLE, Pa. –  The Lebanon Valley College baseball team dropped a 13-2 decision to Messiah in a Commonwealth Conference game Friday afternoon at McGill Park.

Messiah (16-8, 10-3 CC), which has won its last seven games, received a three-hit, no-run performance from senior pitcher Dave Henninger. Sophomore Matt Sanders started on the mound for Lebanon Valley (14-11, 5-8 CC) and allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings in taking the loss.

The Falcons out-hit LVC 16-5 and took drew nine walks.

Messiah never trailed after scoring once in the first, once in the second, and twice in the third to take a 4-0 lead. After adding another tally in the fifth, Messiah broke open the game with a six-run seventh to make it an 11-0 game.

The Falcons crossed the plate two more times in the ninth before the Flying Dutchmen broke up the shutout on the final play of the game. Freshman pinch-hitter Jason Rhoads ripped a two-out, two-run double but was thrown out at third.

Henninger (3-0) walked just one and struck out 11. He allowed the ball to leave the infield only three times. Sanders (1-3) walked three and struck out four.

Senior first baseman Craig Denlinger led the Dutchmen at the plate, going 2-for-3.

Lebanon Valley and Messiah complete their three-game series with a doubleheader at Messiah on Saturday at noon.
