ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior center Jennifer Northcott pulled down her 1,000th career rebound, and sophomore forward Monica Johnson scored a game- and career-high 25 points but it wasn’t enough as Lebanon Valley dropped a 77-62 decision to Moravian in Commonwealth Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday at the LVC Gymansium.
Moravian (18-3, 9-1 CC) led by just five with 12:37 left following a Northcott lay-up, but the Greyhounds broke the game open with an 18-6 run over the next six minutes to assume a commanding 63-46 lead with 6:20 left. LVC (13-6, 6-4 CC) was unable to narrow the deficit to under 11 the rest of the way.
With Messiah’s win over Susquehanna, Moravian remains in a tie for first with Messiah in the Commonwealth standings. With the loss, LVC slipped a half game behind Widener for fourth in the conference. Widener defeated Albright Wednesday evening.
Northcott picked up rebound No. 1,000 on the offensive glass, as she reached high above her head to pull in a missed three-pointer from freshman guard Donna Geiger with 9:20 left in the game. She is the first player in LVC men’s or women’s basketball history to reach the milestone. Already a 1,000-point scorer, Northcott now has 1,170 points and 1,004 rebounds.
Johnson shot 10-for-16 from the field and was 5-for-6 at the foul line in 30 minutes off the bench.
Sophomore forward Kelly Applegate posted 16 points and nine rebounds and was one of four Moravian players to reach double figures in scoring. Sophomore forward Jenny Hackleman recorded 14 points and seven rebounds while junior forward Stephanie Seaman had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Katie Rizman added 13 points, shooting 3-for-5 from three-point range, while senior guard Jen Behagg handed out seven assists.
Sophomore forward Allie Butler contributed 10 points for LVC while senior guard Crystal Gibson had nine points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Lebanon Valley led just twice on the evening – at 2-0 and 4-3. A Northcott lay-up had LVC up 4-3, but Moravian used an 11-0 run to go up by 10 with 13:27 left in the opening half.
The Valley came right back with an 8-2 spurt to cut the gap to four, and a fastbreak lay-up by Johnson made it 18-14. But Moravian began pulling away late in the half, and its lead reached double figures again (31-20) after an Applegate lay-up capped a 6-0 surge with 2:10 on the clock. Moravian took a 33-26 lead into the locker room.
Lebanon Valley kept it close early in the second half, and a jumper from senior forward Tamika Rogers had LVC within two (38-36) with 14:55 left. But that’s as close as the Valley would get.
Moravian out-rebounded LVC 44-30.
Lebanon Valley returns to action on Saturday, when it visits Elizabethtown College at 2 p.m. in the first game of a men’s and women’s doubleheader.
