ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira College scored eight unanswered goals over the game’s opening 28:59 and the Soaring Eagles defeated Lebanon Valley 9-2 in ECAC West ice hockey action Friday evening.

Dave McKenna and Darcy Pettie led the way for Elmira (3-4, 1-3 ECAC West) with two goals apiece while Mark Mazzetti handed out four assists.

Lebanon Valley (3-5, 0-3 ECAC West) was unable to get on the scoreboard until junior Jeff Smith scored his fifth goal of the season on a power play with 2:26 left in the second period.

Junior Alex Beatrice posted the Flying Dutchmen’s other goal when he also converted a power play 7:56 into the final period.

Sophomore Craig Vardy started in goal for the Valley and suffered the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season. Vardy allowed six goals while making 18 saves over 22:08 of action. Senior Sonny Holding came on to play the final 37:52 and surrendered three goals while stopping 21 shots.

Greg Fargo played the opening 50:39 for Elmira and made 17 saves.

The Soaring Eagles were 5-for-12 on power plays while the Dutchmen were 2-for-8.

Lebanon Valley returns to action on Saturday, when it visits Hobart College at 4 p.m. in another ECAC West contest.
