Men’s Basketball Falls to Ursinus, 70-46

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Mike McGarvey scored 20 points and handed out eight assists as Ursinus College defeated Lebanon Valley 70-46 in non-conference men’s basketball action Sunday afternoon at Helfferich Gymnasium.

Lebanon Valley fell to 2-2 while Ursinus improved to 2-1.

The Flying Dutchmen received a team-high 10 points from junior guard Jimmy Curran while senior forward Dan Hogan grabbed 11 rebounds.

Ursinus controlled the game from the start and trailed just twice early on at 3-2 and 6-4. It was 17-11 in favor of the Bears after a put-back from junior forward Brian Wolensky before 10-0 Ursinus run over the next 4:15 put the home team on top 27-11. The Dutchmen came back with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a three-pointer from junior guard Hunter Bretschneider at the 4:54 mark, to make it a nine-point game, and LVC trailed 29-20 at the half.

The Bears opened the second period with 12-2 run to take a 19-point lead (41-22) with 16:01 left. Ursinus then put the game away with a 16-0 run midway through the stanza that gave it a commanding 28-point advantage (58-30) with 9:33 remaining.

McGarvey shot 7-for-12 and 5-for-8 from three-point range, although the rest of the team was a combined 0-for-9 from behind the arc. Nick Shattuck added 14 points, nine assists, seven steals, and three blocks while Brian McEvily posted 10 points. Matt Fabian corralled a game-high 15 rebounds for the Bears.

Lebanon Valley was held to a season-low 28.1% shooting mark from the field, including a 25.0% (5-for-20) effort from three-point territory, and committed a season-high 26 turnovers.

The Dutchmen return to the hardwood on Tuesday, when they open their Commonwealth Conference schedule at Widener University in a 7 p.m. start.
