ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior forward Dan Hogan scored 14 points and ripped down a career-high 15 rebounds, leading the Lebanon Valley College men’s basketball team to a 55-49 win over Arcadia University in the first round of LVC’s 14th annual Rinso Marquette Tournament Saturday afternoon in the LVC Gymnasium.
The game marked the season opener for both teams.
Lebanon Valley advances to the Marquette championship game for the 14th tournament in a row and will meet Randolph-Macon College in Sunday’s title game at 3 p.m. Randolph-Macon, coached by LVC Athletic Hall of Famer Mike Rhoades ’95, defeated Averett University 105-80 in its first-round game. Averett will face Arcadia in the 1:00 consolation game.
The Dutchman defense picked up right where it left off last season, when it led Division III in field-goal percentage defense (36.1%). Lebanon Valley held Arcadia to 32.3% shooting, including a 10.0% mark (2-for-20) from three-point territory.
Hogan’s 15 boards also set a new gymnasium men’s record. He also had two big jump shots and a pair of rebounds that helped salt the victory inside the game’s final three minutes.
Junior forward Dave Kaysan, playing his first game since the 2003-04 campaign after missing all of last season with a knee injury, started for the Dutchmen and posted 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Jimmy Curran added 11 points while freshman guard Kyle Enoch had six points, six rebounds, and four steals in his collegiate debut.
The Knights were paced by sophomore guard Kevin Brown, who scored a game-high 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Junior forward Andrew Martin contributed 10 points.
Lebanon Valley held the lead for the first eight minutes before an 11-2 Arcadia spurt gave the Knights a six-point lead (18-12), their largest advantage of the game, with 9:06 left in the opening half. Arcadia led by five (21-16) with 5:37 on the clock before the Dutchmen ran off seven straight points, with Kasyan starting the run with a three-pointer and capping it with a pair of free throws, to put LVC back in front. A three-pointer from freshman guard Bobby Mulholland with four ticks showing pulled the Knights to within two (28-26) at halftime.
The Knights came back to take the lead on a pair of occasions in the second half, the second of which came on a jumper from junior guard Chris Troutman with 12:07 left that made it 38-36. But after a Hogan lay-up, another Kasyan three-pointer with 10:28 left gave the Dutchmen the lead (41-38) for good.
Arcadia rallied late, and sophomore guard Eric Elliott hit three straight free throws with 3:23 remaining after getting fouled on a three-pointer to make it 49-47. Hogan then canned a jumper from the right elbow on the next trip down the court, and Enoch sunk a pair of foul shots, the first two attempts of his collegiate career, with 1:37 on the clock to give LVC a six-point (53-47) edge.
A Martin baby-hook with 1:22 left made it a four-point contest, but Hogan set the final score with his second jumper, this one coming with 52 seconds to go.
Arcadia missed its final five shots, three of which came from beyond the arc.
