ANNVILLE, Pa. – Heading into its home Commonwealth Conference men’s soccer match with Albright College on Saturday, Lebanon Valley needed to win and get help from several other teams in the conference to have a chance to make the Commonwealth playoffs.
The Flying Dutchmen beat Albright 3-0 while Susquehanna and Juniata did the rest. The Crusaders beat Moravian 3-1 while the Eagles topped Widener 1-0, and LVC tied Albright for fourth in the final conference standings. Due to its head-to-head win over the Lions, the Dutchmen received an improbable playoff berth.
Lebanon Valley (7-8-1, 2-4-2 CC) has earned the four seed in the conference tournament and will visit one seed and top-ranked Messiah College on Wednesday at a time to be announced.
The Dutchmen received all the scoring they would need when junior Adam Burns drilled in a penalty kick in the 10th minute.
Lebanon Valley still led by only a goal before breaking the game open with a pair of tallies in the final five minutes. Junior Dave Soule scored off an assist from sophomore Nick Wanyo in the 86th minute for his first collegiate goal. Then in the 88th minute, Wanyo closed out the scoring with his team-leading eighth goal of the year, set up by an assist from sophomore Dan Pitonyak.
Sophomore goalie John Mentzer saved six shots and earned his third shutout of the season. Sophomore Joe Hartmann made five saves for Albright (8-10-1, 2-4-1 CC).
