ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley scored three times over the game’s first 13:28 and the Flying Dutchmen picked up their first Commonwealth Conference win of the season, defeating Moravian College 5-1 in men’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Herbert Field.
The Dutchmen never trailed after sophomore Eric Nkurunziza rebounded in a loose ball in the third minute for his fifth goal of the season.
Sophomore Nick Wanyo then scored two goals 7:23 apart to stake LVC to a 3-0 lead. He potted a shot off a rebound in the seventh minute, then converted a feed from junior Adam Schies in the 14th minute for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. It was the first collegiate assist and point for Schies.
The Dutchmen enjoyed a 4-0 halftime lead after junior Tyler Frantz chipped in a beautiful shot over the goalie’s head for his fourth goal of the year. Junior Dave Soule assisted for his first collegiate point.
Lebanon Valley out-shot Moravian (4-9-2, 2-3 CC) 15-3 in the opening half.
Senior Matt Rich scored the Dutchmen’s final goal when, in the 62nd minute, he booted home a shot on a free kick from just outside the 18 for his first tally of the season.
The Greyhounds avoided a shutout when Adam Williamson scored an unassisted goal in the 65th minute.
Sophomore John Mentzer made seven saves to earn the win in goal for the Dutchmen. Ryan Walker saved six shots while playing the first half and was credited with the loss for Moravian.
The Dutchmen return to Commonwealth Conference action when they visit Widener University at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
