ANNVILLE, Pa. – Freshman Jason Yarnall (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute, lifting the Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Widener University at Herbert Field Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action.
Lebanon Valley improved to 6-1-1 and 1-0-1 in the Commonwealth while Widener dropped 5-4-0 and to 2-1-0 in conference play.
Freshman Nick Wanyo (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) opened the scoring for the Dutchmen with his third goal of the season, just 1:39 into the game, off an assist from senior Fran Pitonyak (Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost).
The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead into the second period, after senior Eric Wyzykowski scored unassisted during the 21st minute and classmate Matt Skipper knocked the ball into an open net in the 34th minute.
Senior Brian Sapienza (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) tied things up with his first goal of the season on a free kick in the 51st minute.
Yarnalll's game winner at 84:13 was assisted by sophomore Tyler Frantz (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove). It was the first collegiate goal for Yarnall.
Freshman goalie John Mentzer (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) finished with five saves while improving to 6-1-1 on the season. Jason Delozier stopped nine shots for Widener.
Lebanon Valley out-shot the Pioneers 17-10.
The Dutchmen return to action Wednesday, hosting Chestnut Hill College in a non-conference match-up at 4 p.m.
