ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team opened its Commonwealth Conference schedule on a strong note Wednesday afternoon, playing to a 0-0 tie against Elizabethtown College at Herbert Field.
Lebanon Valley (5-1-1, 0-0-1 CC) came away with the tie despite playing a man down over the final 13:49 after junior Justin Klunk (Hanover, Pa./South Western) received his second yellow card.
Freshman goalie John Mentzer (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) recorded an outstanding showing in goal for the Dutchmen, saving a season-high eight shots for his third shutout of the season. He came up with a pair of big saves late in the game to preserve the tie for LVC. Mentzer deflected away a Blue Jay shot that sailed just over the crossbar seconds before the end of the first overtime, then smothered another shot in a one-on-one situation midway through the second overtime.
Senior Edwin Tichenor turned aside six LVC shots to earn a shutout for Elizabethtown (3-1-3, 0-0-1 CC).
The Blue Jays, ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic region, appeared to have scored the game-winning goal late in the first overtime, but it was negated by an offsides penalty.
Etown out-shot the Valley 23-12.
Lebanon Valley returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Widener University at 2 p.m. in another Commonwealth Conference showdown.
