SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Freshman Mimi Sullivan (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) scored the game-winning goal with 17:32 remaining and classmate Alyssa Stine (Birdsboro, Pa./Twin Valley) provided a pair of assists as No. 18 Lebanon Valley defeated host Susquehanna 2-1 in the Commonwealth Conference field hockey opener for both schools Thursday afternoon.
Lebanon Valley (4-3, 1-0 CC) won for the second time in its last three outings while Susquehanna (2-2, 0-1 CC) lost for the first time since dropping its season opener on Sept. 2.
Sullivan converted a feed from Stine for her third goal of the season and her first collegiate game-winning goal.
Susquehanna took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Jenni Iacovone knocked in an unassisted goal. Lebanon Valley pulled even midway through the half when sophomore Steph Marguglio (Bridgeton, N.J./Bridgeton) drilled in her team-leading 10th goal of the season. She has now scored at least one goal in five of the team’s seven games and is just three goals shy of her total from last season.
Sophomore Katie Pawlewicz (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) saved eight shots to earn the win and improve to 3-1-0 for the season. Shannon Baker picked up six shots in a losing effort for Susquehanna.
Lebanon Valley plays the third of six straight road games when it visits Villa Julie College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
