ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Randy Sturm accomplished the hat trick by scoring three goals as DeSales University handed the Lebanon Valley College men’s soccer team its first loss of the season, defeating the Flying Dutchmen 4-1 in non-conference action at Herbert Field Wednesday afternoon.
DeSales (3-2-0) won for the first time in three matches and handed Lebanon Valley (4-1-0) its first loss of the season.
The Bulldogs never trailed as Sturm, who entered the game with only goal on the season, scored the game’s first three goals. He found the back of the net twice in the first half to give DU a 2-0 halftime lead, then found paydirt again in the 53rd minute with his fourth goal of the season.
Sophomore Adam Burns (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) made it 3-1 in the 57th minute when he knocked in his first goal of the season. Classmate Erik Vargo (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) set up Burns with a perfect cross from the left flank, and Burns headed the ball past DeSales goalie Brad Ferguson, one of three keepers used by the Bulldogs.
DeSales freshman Kyle Moore put the game out of reach with a goal in the 67th minute.
Freshman Tigh Savercool played the opening half in goal for DeSales and turned aside all four shots he faced to earn the win. Freshman John Mentzer (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) saved five shots while suffering his first collegiate loss for the Valley.
The Dutchmen picked up their schedule on Saturday, when they visit Goucher College at 1 p.m. in another non-conference contest
