Baseball Concludes Season With Split Against Albright

Game 1 Box Score   Game 2 Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College baseball team saw its 2004 season come to a close after splitting a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Albright College on Saturday afternoon at McGill Park.

The Flying Dutchmen entered the day needing a sweep to have a chance at a Commonwealth Conference playoff berth. Albright (16-18, 11-10 CC) won the opener 3-1 to dash LVC's playoff hopes, but LVC (15-20, 10-11 CC) came back to win the nightcap 7-1. The Dutchmen's victory in Game Two, coupled with Elizabethtown's split with Messiah, eliminated Albright from playoff contention.

LVC finished the season in sixth place in the conference standings.

In the first game, David Ganovsky held the Valley to one run over six innings, and David Omlor fanned the side in the seventh to earn the save. Junior Craig Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) fired a six-hit, complete-game victory for the Valley in the nightcap.

The Lions pushed one run across in the first, second and third innings of the opener to take a 3-0 lead against LVC starter Robert Nordall (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon). The Dutchmen cut it to 3-1 in the third on an RBI-single by junior Scott Montgomery (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township). But Ganovsky and Omlor would combine to limit the Dutchmen to only two hits the rest of the way.

Ganovsky (3-6) held the Dutchmen to one run on four hits and no walks while striking out one. Nordall (3-3) hurled his third complete game of the season while scattering nine hits and walking five. He struck out three.

Albright took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in Game Two, but LVC broke the game open by scoring all seven of its runs from the third through the fifth innings. Montgomery provided the deciding blow with a three-run homer, his second of the season, in the fourth to make it a 6-1 game.

Denlinger (3-2) went the distance to come away with his second complete game of the year. He yielded six hits and one walk while striking out five.

Montgomery finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs while junior Ron Weaver (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) ripped his seventh home run of the season with a solo shot in the fifth.

Albright starter Jeremy Kondisko (2-3) suffered the loss, as he allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk.
