Softball Falls to Ursinus in Rain-Shortened Game

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa.  – Ursinus scored four runs over the fifth and sixth innings to break open a 1-1 game en route to a 5-2 victory over Lebanon Valley in non-conference softball action Thursday afternoon at the LVC Softball Park.

The game was called after six innings due to rain. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled.

Ursinus improved to 17-4-1 with the win while Lebanon Valley fell to 7-12.

Junior Erin Skinner (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) started for the Bears and threw all six innings to pick up the win. Skinner (10-1), who entered the game with an ERA of 0.21, allowed as many earned runs against LVC (two) as she had given up all season. She yielded five hits and struck out six.

Freshman Jenn Roberts (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) started for LVC and was handed the loss. Roberts (2-6) threw 5 2/3 innings and gave up all five of the Bears’ runs, although just two were earned. She allowed only four hits but walked four. She struck out eight.

Junior Gina Battistelli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) walloped her first collegiate home run for LVC with a solo shot in the fifth.

Lebanon Valley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single by junior Chris Jessen (Newfield, N.J./Woodstown). Ursinus pulled even with an unearned run in the third.

The Bears took the lead for good with two more unearned runs in the fifth. Battistelli made it a one-run game with her long ball in the bottom of the inning, but Ursinus came back with a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Lebanon Valley returns to action next Thursday, when it hosts Susquehanna University in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
