GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College softball team lost both ends of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Messiah College.
The Falcons won the first game 6-1 before scoring a 6-4 win the nightcap.
Lebanon Valley fell to 7-11 and 3-3 in conference play while Messiah improved to 14-9-1 and 3-5 in the conference.
In the first game, Messiah starter Vikki Downes (6-3) tossed a two-hit complete game while striking out eight. Freshman Jenn Roberts (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) took the loss for Lebanon Valley. Pitching for the first time in over a week, Roberts (2-5) was touched for 10 hits while striking out five.
Messiah did all of its damage in one inning in the nightcap, as the Falcons scored all six of its runs in a five-hit fourth to break open a scoreless ballgame. Rebecca Croft (5-4) started on the hill and gave up just one run in five innings to pick up the win. Vikki Downes threw the final 2/3 of an inning to record the save.
LVC starting pitcher Alisa Albers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) threw four innings and suffered the loss. Albers (1-4) gave up all six of the Falcons’ runs on eight hits and three walks. She struck out two. Freshman Kelly O’Toole (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe) threw the final two innings and retired all six batters she faced while striking out a pair.
Freshman Amy Batz (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) led the way at the plate for LVC, going 3-for-4. Freshman Jenn Parks (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while sophomore Mandi Nace (Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood) added a 2-for-3 effort. Senior Kristin Crouse (Columbia, Pa./Columbia) chipped in with a pair of runs.
Lebanon Valley returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Ursinus College at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
