Box Score
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Junior Stephen Tomaszewski (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) threw a six-hit shutout, leading Moravian College to a 2-0 win over Lebanon Valley in a quick Commonwealth Conference baseball game Friday afternoon at McGill Park.
Lebanon Valley (3-7, 0-2 CC) lost its third straight game since returning from its Spring Break trip to Florida while Moravian (3-9, 2-2 CC) snapped a five-game losing streak.
The game lasted just two hours and 10 minutes and featured only 10 total hits.
Senior Matthew Turtell (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) smacked a solo home run to left in the top of the third to give Tomaszewski all the run support he would need. Moravian also pushed across a run in the ninth on a two walks, a sacrifice bunt and a suicide squeeze by Turtell.
Lebanon Valley’s best chance to score came in the bottom of the eighth when, following singles by junior Ron Weaver (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) and sophomore Alex Morrison (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry), senior Jeff Grieger (Riegelsville, Pa./Wilson) was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases. However, junior Craig Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) lined out hard to right to end the inning.
Tomaszewski (2-1) finished with one walk and four strikeouts while logging his first shutout of the season. He allowed the Flying Dutchmen to reach third only once and allowed LVC to advance to second just twice.
Tomaszewski’s counterpart, freshman Matthew Sanders (Lebanon, Pa./Annville-Cleona), was just as effective for Lebanon Valley. Sanders (1-1), making just his second collegiate start, worked eight innings and yielded only two hits while walking five and striking out five. He was charged with both of Moravian’s runs.
Turtell finished with a pair of hits for Moravian while junior Scott Montgomery (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) ripped a pair of singles for the Dutchmen.
Lebanon Valley faces Moravian again on Saturday, when the Dutchmen visit Bethlehem for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
