CHESTER, Pa. – Senior guard Evan Harlor (Danville, Pa./Danville) scored a team-high 20 points on 6-of-8 three-point shooting, but Widener outscored Lebanon Valley 33-18 in the second half en route to a 63-54 victory in the Commonwealth Conference men's basketball semifinals Wednesday evening at the Schwartz Athletic Center.
Lebanon Valley (14-12), which lost for the fourth game in a row, will now hope for a possible bid in the ECAC South tournament.
Widener (18-7) advances to the Commonwealth Conference championship game, where it will play Elizabethtown College, a 99-87 overtime winner over Albright College in the other Commonwealth semifinal.
The Pioneers were led by senior guard Bilal McAfee, who scored 18 points and handed out a game-high five assists. Senior guard Casey Stitzel added 17 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting.
Lebanon Valley jumped to a 36-30 lead at the end of the first half in which Harlor scored 17 of his points. The senior guard shot a sizzling 5-for-5 from three-point range in the opening stanza to lead a 54.2% shooting effort for LVC in the first half.
The second half was a different story for the Valley, as the Dutchmen managed only five field goals on 5-of-21 shooting. In the meantime, Widener shot 40.9% to pull away for the victory.
Junior guard J.D. Byers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) added 12 points and four assists for the Valley. He also hit a pair of three-pointers to tie Lebanon Valley's single-season record of 84 set in the 1994-95 season by Mike Rhoades '95.
Sophomore forward Dave Kasyan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) added nine points and a game-high eight rebounds for LVC while sophomore forward Dan Hogan (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) handed out four assists.
