Women’s Basketball Falls to Moravian, 67-53

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman forward Kelly Applegate posted 18 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs, coming off the bench to lead the Moravian College women’s basketball team to a 67-53 victory over Lebanon Valley Wednesday evening at Johnston Hall.

LVC (18-3, 8-3 CC) lost for the first time in its last four games and fell into a tie with Moravian (15-7, 8-3 CC) for second place in the Commonwealth Conference standings. The Greyhounds, who played the game without their leading scorer, Kim Hughes (12.6 ppg) won for the fifth time in their last six games.

Junior guard Erin Eaby (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) paced the Valley with 12 points while junior guard Crystal Gibson (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) recorded nine points and a game-high six assists. Junior forward Tamika Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Milford Academy) and junior center Jennifer Northcott (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) posted eight points and 10 rebounds apiece.

LVC trailed by only two (54-52) with 3:25 left after a Rogers layup, but Moravian outscored the Flying Dutchmen 13-1 the rest of the way. The Greyhounds sealed their victory at the foul line, making 11 of their final 12 free throws.

Lebanon Valley led by as much as six (8-2) in the early going, but a 9-2 Moravian run gave the Greyhounds their first lead (11-10) of the game with 12:25 left in the half. The game was tied at 16 with 8:23 to go in the period before LVC put together a 13-4 run to push its lead to nine (29-20), its largest lead of the game, with 3:24 on the clock. However, the Greyhounds closed the half on a 10-0 run and took a 30-29 lead into the locker room.

Applegate posted 16 points and six rebounds over the opening 20 minutes while Rogers pulled down eight rebounds in the opening half.

Moravian pushed its advantage to eight (43-35) with 13:48 left in the game, but LVC refused to go away. However, the Valley was never able to reduce the deficit to less than two the rest of the way.

Lebanon Valley return to action on Saturday when it hosts Elizabethtown College at 4 p.m. in the second game of a men’s and women’s Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
