Stellar Defense Lifts Men’s Basketball Over Messiah

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley held Messiah to 30.0% shooting and all five Flying Dutchmen starters reached double figures in scoring as LVC defeated the Falcons 70-56 in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the LVC Gymnasium.

The Dutchmen (5-1, 2-0 CC) won their fourth game in a row and handed Messiah (5-1, 1-1 CC) its first loss of the season.

Lebanon Valley held the Falcons to 9-for-30 shooting in both halves for its best defensive effort since limiting Bluffton to 28.3% shooting in its season opener.

Senior guard J.D. Byers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored a team-high 15 points and handed out six assists for LVC while junior forward Dan Hogan (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go with four steals. Senior center Brad Stigelman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and sophomore guard Jimmy Curran (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) scored 11 points apiece while senior forward Steve Buzinski (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming) added 10 points.

Stigeleman and Buzinski ripped down eight rebounds apiece.

Sophomore forward Jared Yoder scored a game-high 19 points and corralled eight rebounds coming off the bench for Messiah. Sophomore guard Matt Henninger contributed 10 points.

Senior guard Dave Carter added six assists and six steals for the Falcons.

Lebanon Valley hit its first four shots and never trailed after outscoring Messiah 13-2 over the game's opening 6:37. Curran and Hogan combined for 11 points during the Dutchmen's early run.

Messiah answered with a 9-3 run to cut it to 16-12 with 7:51 left in the first half. The Falcons whittled the deficit down to three on two occasions before the end of the stanza and LVC assumed a 28-23 halftime lead.

The Dutchmen also started the second half strong, making six of their first eight shots to open up a 10-point lead (40-30) with 15:33 left. Messiah was unable to get the deficit under seven the rest of the way.

Lebanon Valley shot 62.1% in the second half and 52.6% for the game.

The Dutchmen pick up their schedule on Tuesday, when they travel to Delaware Valley College for a non-conference game starting at 8 p.m.
