Field Hockey Falls to Messiah in Commonwealth Title Game

Box Score

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Senior Danae Chambers scored four goals for Messiah as the No. 2 Falcons defeated No. 13 Lebanon Valley 8-2 in the Commonwealth Conference championship game Saturday afternoon.

Messiah (18-1), the tournament’s top seed, earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Lebanon Valley (15-7) will now wait for a possible bid to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament.

Sophomore Steph Marguglio (Bridgeton, N.J./Bridgeton) scored both of Lebanon Valley’s goals, each off of a penalty corner.

Marguglio, who has 24 goals on the season, is just two shy of Lora Zimmerman’s ’01 single-season record of 26, and will have a chance to equal or break the record if the Flying Dutchmen earn an ECAC bid.

Messiah quickly ran out to a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes on goals from Heather Kresge and Jenna Schwind, but Marguglio made it 2-1 when she swept in a penalty corner feed from Fairyn McCleary (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern).

The Falcons, however, stormed back with three more goals before the half from Chambers, Lindsey Hunter, and Aftan Fisher, and Messiah took a 5-1 after 35 minutes of play.

The Dutchmen pulled within three after the halftime break when Marguglio scored her second goal unassisted, but Messiah put the game out of reach when Chambers rattled in three straight second-half goals to seal the Falcons’ fourth-straight Commonwealth title.
