ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Brian Healy scored the game’s lone goal in the sixth minute, and second-seeded Elizabethtown held on to defeat third-seeded Lebanon Valley 1-0 in the Commonwealth Conference men’s soccer semifinals Tuesday evening.
Elizabethtown (13-3-3) advances to the Commonwealth championship game to face top-seeded Messiah College, a 3-0 winner over fourth-seeded Widener University in the other semifinal.
Lebanon Valley (10-5-3), competing in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs for the fourth time in school history, dropped to 0-4 all-time in Commonwealth playoff action. The Flying Dutchmen will await a possible berth in the ECAC Southern region playoffs.
Mike Helsel fed Healy the ball from the right wing, and Healy one-timed it past LVC keeper John Mentzer (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) and into the bottom right corner of the net to finish a give-and-go play.
The Blue Jays out-shot LVC 7-4 in the opening half and 6-3 in the second stanza for a 13-7 overall advantage. E-town had four corner kicks while the Dutchmen had three.
Mentzer recorded six saves for LVC while Elizabethtown’s Edwin Tichenor stopped five Dutchman shots.
