ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley swept the doubles matches, then held on to capture two of four singles contests to hold on for a big 5-4 win over Messiah College in Commonwealth Conference women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at the LVC Tennis Courts.
Lebanon Valley (6-5, 3-3 CC) defeated Messiah for the first time in school history. The Flying Dutchmen can clinch a berth in the inaugural Commonwealth Conference playoffs with a victory over Widener on Sunday.
In doubles action, senior Chris Jessen (Newfield, N.J./Woodstown) and freshman Brooke Sensenig (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) teamed up for an 8-5 win at the No. 1 position, while freshman Leslie Sabas (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and junior Sophia Kwon (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored an 8-3 triumph at the second slot. Juniors Jenny Larson (Kelso, Wash./Kelso) and Angie Petiak (Wapwallopen, Pa./Berwick) teamed up for an 8-4 win at third doubles to complete the sweep for LVC. Larson and Petiak also improved to 8-1 on the season with their win.
Junior Amanda Lubold (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, while Larson claimed her second victory of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win at sixth singles.
Lebanon Vallley takes on Widener at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
