Volleyball Upsets Nationally-Ranked Nazareth, Finishes Second at Cortland Tourney

CORTLAND, N.Y. – After knocking off a nationally-ranked opponent, the Lebanon Valley College volleyball team finished second at the Red Dragon Classic at SUNY-Cortland on Saturday afternoon.

The Flying Dutchmen rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat 24th-ranked Nazareth College (N.Y.) 3-2 in the championship bracket of the tournament. LVC (4-4) lost 30-17 and 30-28 in games one and two but stormed back with 30-21, 30-24 and 15-11 victories.

Earlier in the day, the Valley lost 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-27) to Cortland.

Junior Amanda Bahn (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove), senior Angie McCracken (York Springs, Pa./Woodsboro (Md.)) and senior Sherri Pursel (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) were named to the all-tournament team.

Against Cortland, Bahn and sophomore Lexi Horstman (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) smacked a team-high 11 kills each. Horstman also had five blocks while sophomore Katie Ferree (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) had 15 digs.

Bahn enjoyed an outstanding match against Nazareth, posting a team-high 17 kills to go with four aces. Horstman recorded 13 kills in the match while Pursel added 12 kills and a team-high 27 digs. McCracken stuffed six blocks while sophomore Cat Roth (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) had 54 assists. Ferree added 21 digs.

Lebanon Valley opened the tournament with a pair of victories on Friday night.

The Valley pulled out a nail-biting 3-2 victory over SUNY-Fredonia, as LVC prevailed 30-19,

29-31, 26-30, 30-20 and 15-11. The Flying Dutchmen followed up with a 3-1 (30-28, 30-15, 28-30, 30-18) win over Keuka College (N.Y.)

Against Fredonia, Bahn tallied eight service aces, 13 kills and 20 digs. Pursel added 15 kills and 12 digs while Horstman pitched in with 15 kills and three aces. Roth contributed 47 assists and 12 digs.

Bahn had another outstanding match against Keuka. She served up another eight aces and threw down a team-high 17 kills. Pursel and Horstman each notched nine kills while Ferree a team-high 11 digs. Ferree came up with 10 digs while senior McCracken had four aces.

Lebanon Valley takes on Dickinson College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the team’s home opener.
