ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior Kim McDonald (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) scored two goals and became Lebanon Valley's career goals leader as Lebanon Valley College defeated DeSales University 7-0 Wednesday afternoon in MAC non-conference women's soccer action at Herbert Field.
McDonald's two goals pushed her career total to 31, one more than Chrissy Henise '98 scored from 1996-97. McDonald is also Lebanon Valley's career scoring leader with 83 points.
Senior Amber Spell (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) put the Valley (4-1-1) on the scoreboard in the ninth minute when she converted a feed from classmate Katie Altemose (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg). McDonald found paydirt just over a minute later when she floated a left-footer from the left wing just over the head of DeSales keeper Carolyn Trezza for her record-tying goal.
LVC, ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region poll, took a 2-0 lead into halftime intermission after out-shooting the Bulldogs (1-7-1) 18-1, then put the game away with a three-goal flurry over the opening 4:28 of the second half. McDonald made it 3-0 just over two minutes into the stanza with her record-breaking goal, an arcing left-footer from the left win into the top right corner of the net on a breakaway.
Altemose pushed the Valley's advantage to 4-0 in the 49th minute with her 30th career goal as she tied Henise's previous record. In the 50th minute, junior Christine Schmidt (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) completed LVC's scoring outburst wither her first goal of the season.
Lebanon Valley tacked on a pair of goals late in the match. Sophomore Christy Puthawala (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) found the back of the net for the first time this season in the 70th minute and classmate Abbey Esbenshade (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) completed the Flying Dutchmen's scoring with her first goal of the year in the 84th minute.
Sophomore Jess Conrad (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) played the opening 49:28 in goal and picked up the win, making one save. Sophomore Becky Kuhfahl (San Jose, Calif./Oak Grove), making her LVC debut, stopped four shots and shut out the Bulldogs over the final 40:32.
Lebanon Valley returns to Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday when the team visits Widener University in match scheduled to start at noon.
