CHESTER, Pa. – Widener University won a pair of one-run games with two late rallies and swept Lebanon Valley in LVC's final Commonwealth Conference doubleheader of the season.
The Pioneers (21-13, 7-7 CC) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth of the opener and held on for a 3-2 victory. In the nightcap, Widener pushed across the game-winning run with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh in a 2-1 Pioneer win.
Lebanon Valley (8-17, 3-11 CC) lost by two runs or less for the seventh time in Commonwealth play this season.
Freshman Nicole D'Annunzio and junior Debbie Sulecki each threw a three-hit complete game for Widener.
Freshman Alisa Albers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) hurled a five-hit complete game for LVC in the opener before junior Jess Cooney (Rockledge, Pa./Abington) suffered the loss in the second game despite allowing just five hits in a complete-game effort.
In the opener, Widener scored once to take a 1-0 lead before Albers (4-4) settled in and shut out the Pioneers and yielded just one hit over the next five innings.
LVC went ahead in the fourth when sophomore Gina Battistelli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) belted a two-run double to give the Valley a 2-1 edge.
The Pioneers went back up with two runs on three hits in the sixth. Lebanon Valley threatened in the seventh, putting runners on second and third, but D'Annunzio (8-5) forced a groundout to end the game.
Albers struck out two and walked one for the game while D'Annunzio whiffed two and walked four. Both of D'Annunzio's runs were unearned.
In the nightcap, LVC scored its only run in the fourth, when junior Kendra McQuillis (New
London, Pa./Avon Grove) singled in a run with two outs.
Widener came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Then in the seventh, the Pioneers Chris Camac reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored the winning run on a single by sophomore Linda Hartzell.
Cooney (4-6) surrendered just one earned run, struck out one and walked none. Sulecki (8-5) struck out three, walked none and allowed no earned runs.
Lebanon Valley concludes its season on Monday when it travels to King's College for a MAC non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
