ANNVILLE, Pa. – Freshman Alisa Albers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) threw a seven-hit shutout in the nightcap as Lebanon Valley split a MAC non-conference doubleheader with Wilkes University on Senior Day at the LVC Softball Park on Thursday afternoon.
Wilkes (8-13) won the opener 4-0 before Lebanon Valley (8-17) snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-0 win in game two.
In the nightcap, LVC ripped 10 hits and scored all of its runs in the third inning.
In the first game, sophomore Maryellen Korty fired a five-hit shutout while sophomore Michelle Norman (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) threw a complete game for LVC but suffered the loss.
Sophomore Melissa Ulrich (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) led the Valley with a 3-for-6 effort at the plate for the doubleheader. Lebanon Valley seniors Amanda Potteiger (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) and Amanda Stevenson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) combined to go 4-for-13 in their final home appearance.
Norman (0-6) shut out Wilkes over the first two innings of the opener before the Colonels put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the third to give Korty all the offense she would need. Wilkes padded their lead with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Norman allowed 12 hits and walked one for the game. Korty walked none and struck out three.
LVC supported Albers (4-3) with a four-run, five-hit third in the nightcap. Potteiger ripped an RBI single to right to put LVC up 1-0 before sophomore Gina Battistelli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) cracked a two-run triple to right-center.
Freshman Jessica Abbott (Wantage, N.J./High Point) completed the Valley's big inning with a run-scoring single to right.
Wilkes threatened in the fourth, when it put runners on first and third with one out. However, LVC escaped with an inning-ending double play, as Albers struck out a batter and freshman catcher Mandi Nace (Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood) threw out a runner attempting to steal second.
Albers walked three and struck out two in her second collegiate shutout.
Stevenson and Ulrich each had two hits for the Valley in the second game.
Freshman Jen Trate (3-7) took the loss for Wilkes. She threw all six innings, walked none and struck out one.
Lebanon Valley concludes its 2003 Commonwealth Conference schedule on Saturday when the team visits Widener University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
