ANNVILLE, Pa. – Despite a 4-for-7 day at the plate from senior Amanda Potteiger (Halifax, Pa./Halifax), the Lebanon Valley College softball team was swept by Moravian College in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the LVC Softball Park.
The Greyhounds (24-7, 8-2 CC) won 7-2 in the opener and scored an 8-1 victory in the nightcap.
Moravian pounded out 28 hits over the two games while Lebanon Valley (7-16, 3-9 CC), which lost for the ninth time its last 10 games, collected 18 hits.
Freshman Alisa Albers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) took the loss in game one despite throwing a complete game while junior Jess Cooney (Rockledge, Pa./Abington) lost the nightcap.
Sophomore Gina Battistelli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and senior Amanda Stevenson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) each hit 3-for-7 to lead LVC at the plate.
In the opener, Moravian starting pitcher Meagan Hennessy (11-4) scattered six hits and struck out seven while posting her 15th complete game of the season. The Greyhounds took a 3-0 lead after a four-hit third, then added another run with a two-hit fifth to make 4-0.
LVC cut the deficit in half with three hits and one walk in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Kendra McQuillis (New London, Pa./Avon Grove) beat out a bases-loaded infield single that scored both runs for the Valley.
Moravian put the game out of reach with a two-run seventh.
Albers (3-3) surrendered 11 hits and walked three for the game.
In a slugfest of a nightcap, the two teams combined for 29 hits. The Greyhounds bolted to an early lead with a three-run, four-hit first. Moravian plated two more in the top of third to take a 5-0 advantage before LVC would put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning, when sophomore Melissa Ulrich (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) ripped an RBI double to left.
Lebanon Valley had many scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the game but left seven runners on base over the final four innings.
Moravian added four runs on three hits and one error in the seventh.
Greyhound starter Donna Weiner (12-3) picked up the win despite allowing 12 LVC hits. She struck out three and walked none.
Moravian touched Cooney (4-5) with 17 hits. The Greyhounds left nine runners on base for the game while Lebanon Valley stranded 11.
Lebanon Valley returns to the LVC Softball Park on Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader against Wilkes University at 3:30 p.m.
