READING, Pa. – Sophomore Robert Nordall (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-hit ball and struck out 14 batters over the span of two games as Lebanon Valley split a doubleheader at Albright College in Commonwealth Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Kelchner Field.
Albright (9-9, 3-6 CC) won 8-5 on the strength of a six-run second in the opener before LVC (10-6, 6-4 CC) came back with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap in which Nordall and senior Dallas Noll (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) combined for a two-hitter.
In game one, Nordall was fabulous after coming on in relief of starter Dennis Reilly (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) in the second inning. In 4 2/3 innings, the right-hander allowed just one unearned run while striking out 11. Nordall then started the nightcap and shut out the Lions with three innings of one-hit ball.
Despite his stellar performances, Nordall received a no-decision in each game.
Junior Jeff Grieger (Riegelsville, Pa./Wilson) went 3-for-6 with a home run to lead LVC at the plate while senior Mark Schauren (Columbia, Pa./Columbia) was 3-for-7 with a home run.
Lebanon Valley out-hit Albright 13-7 over the two games.
In the second inning of the opener, the Lions first six batters all reached base against Reilly (3-1), who was making his first appearance in nearly three weeks. All six batters eventually scored as Albright took a 7-0 lead.
LVC put its first run on the scoreboard when, in the third, senior Joe Zielke (Media, Pa./Penncrest) singled home Noll, who was making his first start of the season in the outfield. The Valley added two more runs in the top of the fourth to cut the gap to 7-3 after an RBI-double from Noll and a run-scoring single from sophomore Scott Montgomery (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township).
Albright added an unearned run in the fourth before Rink hammered a two-run homer in the fifth to cut it 8-5. But the Lions relief corps of Dan Jarrett and Matt Slivinsky shut out the Dutchmen without allowing a hit over the final 2 2/3 with Slivinsky picking up his seventh save of the season.
In the nightcap, the Valley broke open a scoreless game in the fifth when Grieger ripped a solo home run with two outs. Albright pulled even after scoring on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
LVC scored its go-ahead runs in the seventh. Schauren led off the inning with a solo homer before Grieger singled in sophomore Jason Luis (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Township), who singled and stole second.
Noll (2-1) threw four innings in relief and picked up the win. He gave up only one run, one hit and two walks while striking out a pair.
Jeremy Kondisko (1-2) took the loss for Albright despite throwing a five-hit complete game.
Montgomery and Rink each went 0-for-3 at the plate and saw their hitting streaks end at 11. However, Grieger (nine) and Schauren (eight) continued theirs.
