ANNVILLLE, Pa. – Senior forward Christina Vouriotis posted game-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds and the No. 13 Messiah College women's basketball team completed an undefeated MAC Commonwealth Conference regular season schedule with a 64-41 win over Lebanon Valley Saturday afternoon in Lynch Gymnasium.
The contest was the final regular season game ever at 53-year-old Lynch for Lebanon Valley. The loss snapped the Valley's eight-game home winning streak.
LVC (19-5, 10-4 CC) will now travel to No. 2 seed Moravian College as the No. 3 seed on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Commonwealth playoffs. Lebanon Valley finished the regular season tied with Moravian for second place in the Commonwealth but a tie-breaking procedure gave the Greyhounds the higher seed.
Top-seeded Messiah (23-2, 14-0 CC) will host No. 4 seed Widener University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Senior forward Stephanie Tighe (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) paced LVC with 19 points.
The Falcons held Lebanon Valley to a season-low 28.6% shooting for the game.
Messiah never trailed after scoring the first six points of the game. The Falcons saw their lead swell to as much as 16 (23-7) with 5:02 left in the opening half. A 9-2 LVC run cut the deficit to nine (25-16) with 2:14 to go, but the Falcons closed the period by scoring the final six points for a 31-16 halftime lead.
LVC pulled to within single digits in the second half and a fast-break lay-up by sophomore guard Erin Eaby (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) trimmed the gap to six (43-37) with 8:06 left. However, Messiah quelled the rally with a 16-0 run over the next 6:01 to assume an insurmountable 22-point lead (59-37) lead with 2:05 remaining.
Sophomore forward Tamika Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Milford Academy) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Valley.
