Ursinus Defeats Men’s Basketball, 102-87

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Junior guard J.D. Byers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored a team-high 24 points, but it wasn't enough as the Lebanon Valley College men's basketball team dropped a 102-87 decision to hot-shooting Ursinus College in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

Ursinus (2-0) was led by senior guard Dennis Stanton, who scored a game-high 37 points.

Sophomore forwards Dave Kasyan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) and Dan Hogan (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) each set career-highs in scoring with 18 and 12 points, respectively, for Lebanon Valley. Junior forward Steve Buzinski (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming) added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds before fouling out with 3:08 left.

The Bears shot 63.6% from the field and were a perfect 21-for-21 from the free-throw line.

Lebanon Valley (2-2) allowed 100 points in a game for the first time since Jan. 11, 1997, when the Flying Dutchmen beat Salisbury State 110-105 in the championship game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament.

LVC raced to an early 12-point (23-11) lead following a layup by Hogan with 11:48 left in the opening half. Kasyan scored 10 of his points during the team's early hot streak.

Ursinus came back with a 12-2 run over the ensuing 4:40 to draw to within two (25-23). A pair of free throws by Stanton with 4:22 left in the half gave the Bears a 31-29 lead, and Ursinus would not trail the rest of the game.

After taking a 41-37 lead into halftime intermission, Ursinus exploded out of the gates in the second half. The Bears surged to a 12-3 run over the opening 2:36 of the second stanza to take their biggest lead (53-41) of the game. Ursinus saw its advantage reach as much as 19 (72-53) with 12:24 left in the game, and the Dutchmen were unable to reduce the deficit to under 11 the rest of the way.

Ursinus out-rebounded LVC 37-24.

Lebanon Valley opens its Commonwealth Conference schedule on Wednesday when it visits Albright College in an 8 p.m. start.
