ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior Matt Bills scored two goals, leading Messiah College to a 2-1 Commonwealth Conference victory over Lebanon Valley College in men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Herbert Field.
Bills gave Messiah (8-2-2, 2-0-1 CC) a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when he took a free kick from sophomore Aaron Casper and deposited a header into the back of the net. Then in the 77th minute, Bills accepted a cross from freshman Tim Stello and blasted home his conference-leading 11th goal of the season.
The Flying Dutchmen (4-8-0, 1-4-0) cut the lead in half in the 82nd minute. Freshman Erik Vargo (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) served a cross to classmate Tyler Frantz (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove), who was waiting wide open in front of the net. Frantz headed the ball into the right side of the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.
Sophomore Chris Vincent stopped one shot to pick up the win for Messiah. Senior Christian Koch (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) made seven saves in a losing effort for the Valley.
Messiah out-shot the Dutchmen 17-4.
Lebanon Valley returns to play on Sunday when the team hosts Christopher Newport (Va.) University at 1 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
