ANNVILLE, Pa. – Freshman Steph Marguglio (Bridgeton, N.J./Bridgeton) scored two goals, including the game-winner, and the No. 14 Lebanon Valley College field hockey team defeated Elizabethtown College 3-1 in Commonwealth Conference action Thursday afternoon.
Lebanon Valley (10-2, 4-0 CC) stretched its winning streak to seven, tying the team's longest such streak since 2001, and stayed undefeated in the Commonwealth Conference. The win also clinched LVC's 14th straight berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference or Commonwealth Conference playoffs.
Elizabethtown (4-11, 2-3 CC) lost its second game in a row after winning three straight.
The Blue Jays took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Melanie Slessinger drove home a shot off the stick of senior Kate Gwilliam just over five minutes into the game. LVC pulled even when junior Crystal Davis (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) converted a feed from freshman Mallary Anderson (Columbia, Pa./Donegal) in front of the goal with 11:04 left in the opening half for her third goal of the season.
Marguglio put the Valley ahead to stay 5:40 before halftime. Senior Jen Selin (Pickerington, Ohio/Fallston) found Marguglio on the left wing in transition, and the freshman knocked in her team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Marguglio provided LVC with an insurance goal when she tipped in a pass from junior Lindsey McCormick (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) just 39 seconds into the second half.
Freshman Katie Pawlewicz (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) picked up six saves in goal to improve to 9-1 for LVC. Junior Lisa Marquette stopped 13 shots in a losing effort for E-town.
