ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Brian Sapienza (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) scored three goals and senior Grant Walter (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) added two assists as the Flying Dutchmen defeated Widener University 5-0 Saturday afternoon at Herbert Field in a Commonwealth Conference match.
LVC, ranked 10th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas Division III Mid-Atlantic Poll, improved to 7-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Commonwealth, while Widener fell to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the Commonwealth.
Sophomore Scott Montgomery (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) opened the scoring for the Flying Dutchmen less than two minutes into the game to give LVC a 1-0 lead. Sapienza then reeled off three straight goals to put the Valley up by a 4-0 margin. Sophomore Justin Ranck (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown) added the final goal of the day with a pass from Montgomery.
Junior Christian Koch (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) made four saves in net to bump his season record to 7-1. The victory was his second shutout on the season.
LVC returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Elizabethtown College in a big Commonwealth Conference showdown beginning at 4 p.m.
