ANNVILLE, Pa. – In a Commonwealth Conference clash between two of the best field hockey teams in Division III, No. 4 Messiah College walked away with a 2-1 decision over No. 9 Lebanon Valley College on Saturday afternoon in the LVC Field Hockey Stadium.
In an evenly-played match, LVC opened the scoring when first-year student Melissa Shultz (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) notched her first collegiate goal on a feed from senior Jenna Micozzi (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) right before the end of the first half. The Valley could not hold on as Messiah responded with a goal from Kelley Stanwell 10 minutes into the second half. The Falcons then took the lead on a goal from Jenna Schwind. Danae Chambers assisted on both goals for Messiah.
With the loss Lebanon Valley falls to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Commonwealth. Messiah improves to 6-2 and 2-0 in conference play.
The Flying Dutchmen resume play next Saturday during Homecoming Weekend as they take on Moravian College in Commonwealth action. Game time is set for noon.
