Volleyball Places Second at Flying Dutchman Tournament

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley swept Ursinus College and Penn State-Altoona 3-0 before dropping a 3-1 decision to King’s College in the championship match of the 11th annual Flying Dutchman Tournament in Lynch Gymnasium Saturday.

LVC is now 10-6 on the season.

Sophomore Amanda Bahn (York, Pa./Spring Grove) and first-year student Megan Brillhart (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) were LVC’s representatives on the all-tournament team.

The Dutchmen handled Ursinus by scores of 30-8, 30-19 and 30-27 in LVC’s opening match of pool play. Bahn led the way with a team-high 11 kills to go with two service aces while Brillhart recorded 10 kills. First-year student Catherine Roth (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) distributed 35 assists while classmate Katie Feree (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) dished out 10 digs. Sophomore Melissa Stein (Bowie, Md./Bowie) notched a team-high three aces.

Against Penn State-Altoona, Bahn paced LVC with 18 kills, 12 digs, six blocks and three aces in a 30-25, 30-19, 30-19 Dutchmen victory. Roth added 40 assists and seven digs while Brillhart threw in nine kills. First-year student Lexi Horstman (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) chipped in with three aces.

Bahn and junior Sherri Pursel (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) enjoyed an outstanding performance in the championship match. Bahn registered 14 digs, 11 kills and three solo blocks while Pursell had 13 kills and 11 digs. Brillhart pounded 10 kills for the Dutchmen and Roth mustered 45 assists and 11 digs. Horstman came up with two solo blocks.

The Valley picks up play on Tuesday with a Commonwealth Conference match against Elizabethtown College. Match time is set for 7 p.m. back in Lynch Gymnasium.
